What the visit includes
A hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar above and below the gum line, polishes the teeth and measures the gum pockets that tell us whether anything is changing. Imaging is taken when it is actually due, not at every visit by reflex.
Then the exam: decay, existing restorations, bite wear, gum health and an oral cancer screening. Plan on about an hour. You leave knowing what we saw and why it matters, not with a vague instruction to floss more.
Your interval, set by your risk
Six months is a convention, not a clinical rule. Patients with stable gums, low decay history and good home care often do fine on that schedule or longer. Patients with periodontal history, dry mouth, heavy tartar or a run of recent decay do far better at three or four months.
We set your interval from what your mouth is actually doing and revisit it as that changes. It is the cheapest dentistry there is, and it is what keeps crowns and root canals off your calendar.
