What the appointment involves
The area is numbed, the decay is removed, and the tooth is cleaned and prepared. Composite is then placed in layers, cured, shaped to match the original anatomy and polished. Your bite is checked so the new surface meets the opposing tooth the way it should.
Most single fillings take well under an hour. Numbness wears off over the next couple of hours, and there is no waiting period before you can eat on a composite filling.
Why composite, and how long it lasts
Composite bonds to the tooth, which means less healthy structure has to be removed to hold it in place, and it matches the surrounding enamel rather than announcing itself in silver.
The honest number: white fillings typically last between three and ten years, depending on how large the filling is, where it sits in the mouth and whether you grind. When a filling has been replaced enough times that little tooth remains, a crown becomes the better long-term answer, and we will say so.
