What the procedure actually involves
When the nerve inside a tooth becomes infected or inflamed, the pressure inside the tooth is what hurts. Root canal therapy removes that tissue, cleans and shapes the canals, and seals them. The tooth stays in your mouth and keeps doing its job.
It is done under local anesthetic, and for most patients it feels much like having a filling placed, only longer. The reputation comes from the toothache people arrive with, not from the treatment that ends it.
Recovery, and what goes on top
Expect the tooth to feel tender to bite on for a few days while the ligament around it calms down. Over-the-counter pain relief is usually enough, and most patients go back to work the next day.
A treated tooth is more brittle than a living one, so a crown almost always follows to protect it from fracturing. In most cases we can complete that crown here in a single visit rather than sending you elsewhere.
