A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a titanium post that fuses to the jaw, then carries a custom restoration on top. Unlike a bridge, it does not require reshaping the healthy teeth on either side. Unlike a denture, it does not move.
Bone responds to pressure. When a tooth is gone, the jaw underneath it begins to shrink, which is why long-term gaps eventually change the shape of the face. An implant keeps that bone loaded and working.
How the process works
Every case starts with imaging and a planning session, where implant position is mapped before surgery day. On placement day, the post is positioned in the jaw. There is a healing period while the bone integrates around it. Then the final crown, bridge or denture is designed and secured.
Timelines vary by case. Some patients are candidates for a faster path. We will tell you which one you are at the consultation rather than after you have committed.
What recovery is actually like
Placing an implant is surgery, and it is normal to have some swelling, bruising, tenderness or minor bleeding for a few days. Most patients describe it as far less difficult than they expected. You will leave with clear post-procedure instructions, and we will prescribe medication where appropriate.
Implants have a very high success rate, but occasionally one does not fuse with the bone. We do not hide that. If it happens, we remove the implant, clean the site and plan the next step with you.
