What counts as an emergency, and the first hour
Severe or escalating toothache, facial swelling, a knocked-out tooth, a fractured tooth with sharp edges or exposed nerve, a lost crown, uncontrolled bleeding or trauma to the jaw. Swelling that spreads toward the eye or throat, or any difficulty breathing or swallowing, is a hospital emergency room visit, not an office one.
In the first hour: rinse with warm salt water, use a cold compress outside the cheek for swelling, and take your usual over-the-counter pain relief unless you have been told not to. A knocked-out adult tooth should be handled by the crown, not the root, kept in milk or saliva, and brought in immediately. Never put aspirin against the gum.
How to reach us
Call the office during regular hours and tell reception it is an emergency. We hold time in the schedule for exactly this and will see you the same day when we can.
Current patients have an after-hours line for evenings and weekends, given to you when you join the practice, so there is always someone to reach when the office is closed.
